Funding

GESIS is financed in particular by funds provided by the federal and state governments within the scope of available budget funds and on the basis of the agreements reached between the federal and state governments in accordance with Article 91b of the Basic Law (Article 15, Paragraph 1 of the GESIS Statutes).

The federal-state funding ratio is set out in the annex to the WGL implementation agreement (AV-WGL). It is 80 to 20 percent. The federal government's actual share is currently higher due to decisions made by the federal and state governments as part of the Pact for Research. By 2030, the federal and state governments will gradually return to the funding formula agreed in the AV-WGL.

GESIS is an institution that carries out infrastructure measures to a considerable extent, meaning that 75 percent of the federal state share is financed by all federal states. The states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg finance the federal state share (25 percent of the federal state share).

In addition, GESIS is financed in particular by

  • third-party funds, in particular from public funding bodies and foundations,
  • income from services and
  • other income.

All income is used to finance the association's statutory tasks. Association fees are not charged.
